eat me, drink me

I LOVE platforms. Call them what you will: wedges, espadrilles, stacked heels, tomato, tomah-toe, they are imperative in helping me reach my dream of 5’10” supermodel status. My entire closet is filled with them. I can’t get enough. Yes, heels are sexy, but I keep going back to the platform.

It takes some getting used to, to always be balancing on uber high levels of wood or rubber strapped to your feet Frankenstein style. But ohhhhh the benefits. You FEEL a head taller than others (you are not), all dresses appear shorter (they are not) and you can have that cute, little embarrassed “I’m so tall will I fit in this room without bumping my head” stance. Like Alice after the first bite of the cookie. Through the years, I have always had mega crushes on short guys, but somehow always ended up falling in love with tall guys. Platforms are essential for these situations. Gonna need a little help to climb that tall drink of water to reach the lips! But, at the end of the day, sometimes, like Alice, you gotta drink the potion to be the real you and become dainty. Unless you really are 5’10”. And in that case… enjoy your comfy flats. Bitch.

xoxo, Alex

The Plates I Keep Coming Back To

Some dishes are worth driving across town for, and this is my running list of the ones that have earned that status. A bowl of something rich and slow-cooked on a cold night, a bright salad that somehow tastes like the whole season on a plate, and a dessert so good it makes the table go quiet. These are the meals that remind me why I love eating out in the first place.

I have learned to order the thing the restaurant is known for, even if it is not what I would normally choose. The signature dish is signature for a reason, and it is almost always the move.

Drinks That Make the Meal

A great drink can turn a nice dinner into a memorable one. I am partial to a bartender who asks what I am in the mood for instead of handing me a menu, and to wine lists with a few unexpected by-the-glass pours so you can experiment without committing to a whole bottle. The pairing matters as much as the plate.

When in doubt, ask the staff what they are excited about that night. The best recommendations I have ever gotten came from simply being curious and letting someone share what they love.
